UPDATE: mercury.all2all.org web server down
Here is an update regarding the status of the mercury.all2all.org web server. Yesterday evening, we found on site that the server had a hardware problem, the RAID controller destroyed the volumes that were connected. This means that we have to restore the server from the last backup. We have already checked the backup and it dates from 10/14/2021 in the morning. The next steps consist in reinstalling the server by replacing the RAID controller and then launching the copy of the data of the sites and databases on this new installation. For an estimate of the return to normal, the sites should be put back on line during the weekend at the latest.

Successful OS upgrade on web server mercury
On Sunday we finished the announced upgrade of the webserver mercury.all2all.org. This intervention was normally planned much earlier but had been postponed due to some technical issues. The most important change is the switch to php7 because php5 is now end-of-life. Please check your websites to see if they work properly since the upgrade yesterday. If they don't, you might want to contact your webmaster to get an urgent upgrade of your web applications and plugins. This is also important to do on a regular basis from a security point of view. When your site has been upgraded recently, it will most likely work without problems. If there are problems and you don't have a webmaster we can put you in contact with one.

Scheduled system OS upgrades on all older webservers
Dear users, we always try to keep our operating systems the longest time possible to ensure your web applications a long life. Therefore we mainly use LTS (long-term-support) editions of Debian GNU/Linux. Recently the LTS support for Debian Wheezy has been stopped and we will therefore upgrade all older webservers in the next 3-4 weeks. This concerns the following webservers: jesus.all2all.org, mohamed.all2all.org and martinlutherking.all2all.org. We will step to the next LTS system and PHP will change to version 5.6. Parallelly we will also upgrade our more recent web servers from PHP 5.6 to PHP7, as PHP5 is becoming more and more obsolete. The first server which will be upgraded to PHP is sigmundfreud.all2all.org. This upgrade will be done next week. There might be some disturbance of the regular working due to reboots and other upgrade tasks but we hope to minimize the impact to your website. Please be aware that you might need to upgrade some of your webapplications once the OS upgrade has been performed.

DDOS attack this morning, server staging.all2all.org renumbered
This morning we suffered from a DDOS attack which paralysed most of your network. We then isolated the targeted IP address on our network and put it on the BGP blackhole list to defeat the DDOS. At around 11:00 the network was back to normal and we registered a total of around 1.5-2 hours of downtime. As a result the server staging.all2all.org was still down after the DDOS was finished because we had to renumber its IP addresse from 79.99.200.33 to 79.99.200.35 as the DDOS was targeted on that former IP address. If you use an external DNS server you will need to modify it with the new IP address of the staging server!

Problem with web server jesus solved, complete hardware replaced
Today the web server jesus.all2all.org had to be rebooted but didn't come up again. It had been online non-stop for around 2 years without any reboot. During the reboot, there wasn't any reaction anymore. We therefore had to take the hardware to the workplace and we decided to change the whole server hardware, just keeping the hard disks with the data. At around 15.30 we had the server back online, now with more RAM and 2 more powerful processors. We hope that this hardware upgrade will also take care of the minor issues the server had the last time.

Problem with web server charlesdarwin solved, RESTORATION COMPLET
Incident report "charlesdarwin": During the scheduled upgrade we encountered a strange issue with the innodb engine of MySQL. Later we also recognised that the data directory received strange permissions during the OS upgrade and no matter how hard we tried this made the deployment of the database impossible. We concluded that there must have been a corruption. We decided at a certain point to stop the repair efforts and to make a complete restoration of the server from backup using a mint Debian Wheezy installer. Now we are shure that the OS is clean and safe. Sorry for the unforseen complications.

IP addresses modification on certain servers
In order to improve the bandwidth supply of some servers located in a former segment all2all network, we will place them in a "carrier neutral" data center which is better connected. This also means that they will receive a new IP address. There will be no problem if the DNS domain name is managed by our internal DNS servers. No problem either for SSL certificates. But be careful if you use an external DNS server and point the name of the IP address. The 62.58.108.0/24 range will be stopped and returned to Ripe on the 19/05/2013.If you are in this case, please contact us to get the new IP address of your server.

Increase of the hard drive prices
Following the current shortage of hard drives on the market, we must face a brutal increase in the purchase cost of this component which does not enable us to maintain the price of our dedicated servers at the same level. During the coming months we will thus ask for a supplement of 80 euros per SATA disc of 1TB until the production goes back to its normal course. This carries the price of the simple dedicated server 1HD to 379 euros and the recommended dedicated server 2HD's to 759 euros.

simple shared web hosting disk quota of 10GB (50MB Web - 3GB Mail - 6GB Backup) for 20 €/an
recommended shared web hosting disk quota of 100GB (10GB Web - 30GB Mail - 60GB Backup) for 60 €/an
large shared web hosting disk quota of 1000GB (100GB Web - 300GB Mail - 600GB Backup) for 120 €/an
With these new offers all2all is one of the most affordable web hosting providers. For more details please see our comparison table here: Technical comparison of shared web hosting plans. Or see the individual pages corresponding to each hosting offer for details. You get for instance with the large web hosting now 100 mailboxes. For each hosting plan the basic mail disk quota is increased to 3GB!
All shared servers are manageable via the web administration interface Webmin. The Virtualmin module offers you a complete, easy and intuitive management access to your hosting account. We have updated the Webmin-Virtualmin installations on all shared servers and we have reedited the manuals in our documentation section on our site.
We also developed a new backup system and every shared web hosting plan includes now a sufficiently large disk quota for daily backups. We keep now 1 month of backups of all your data: databases, files in the web directory and mailboxes. There will be no supplementary costs for you (everything is included). The detailed information about our new backup system can be found here: http://all2all.org/informations/faq/backup/how-works-the-backup/
all2all has now also a Facebook page and a Twitter account. The Facebook page is intended as a relay for the news section on our website and to post summaries of articles which will appear on our future blog. The Twitter account will serve as a central communication platform to announce incidents, planned works, problems, short news, etc. So please connect to our Facebook page and /or Twitter acount.

Cambio subscription instead of company cars
All all2all employees are now subscribed to Cambio. The Cambio system is a model of car rental where people rent cars for short periods of time, allowing participants – following the idea of carsharing – to abondon their own car. The Cambio cars can be ordered by phone or over the internet non-stop. So instead of a company car, we decided to go for the ecological alternative of carsharing. We can now precisely choose the type of car that we need according to the requirements of our interventions. Next to Cambio, we also use the bicycle and public transport and try to reduce the use of cars as much as possible.

Reminder: Imminent upgrade of shared hosting servers to Debian Lenny 5.0 and abandonment of PHP4 for PHP5
Starting from February 15th, the support team of all2all-Moving Art Studio will carry out the migration towards Debian Lenny of all the shared hosting servers which are still running under Debian Etch or Sarge. The principal constraint of this passage to a higher version of the system is the abandonment of the maintenance of the packages of PHP4 and the obligation to pass to PHP5 which will be the only version of PHP from now on available. Please check your sites and prepare for PHP5 compatibility if necessary.

Consequently, the support team of all2all-Moving Art Studio will carry out the migration towards Debian Lenny of all the servers which are still running under Debian Etch by February 15th. Installation of a fiberoptic ring between our 3 datacenters
All2all installs its server racks in three data centers located around Brussels : in Nossegem, Diegem and Zaventem. We have just set up a fiberoptic ring to connect these three centers with an intern circuit of 10Gbps. This new development makes it possible to synchronize servers located at different places, to ensure high speed backup copies from one datacenter to another and to offer alternative connections towards the Internet in the event of a band-width shortage in one of the co-location area.

all2all chooses RAID6 for more security
all2all has chosen RAID6 as storage solution for all its new shared servers, following the problem encountered with our mail server maximusconfessor due to the failure of two consecutive drives in a RAID5 cluster. RAID6 is a technology that guarantees the security of information stored by allocating several hard drives redundantly. Unlike RAID5, RAID6 allows the simultaneous failure of two hard drives without compromising data. To know the technical details of the implementation of RAID 6, we recommend the excellent article by Peter Anvin available here, and an introduction to the various RAID technologies, see the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki /Redundant_array_of_independent_disks1st of june 2009

New ecological charter for all2all
To reflect in our principles the awareness of our users and employees about environmental issues, we decided to adjust our charter. Our activity is not neutral from an ecological standpoint, nonetheless we think that giving you the technical means to express and share your ideas to the rest of the world justifies the energy invested. We have therefore included a paragraph defining a clear course that we are committed to respect, to continue our role in minimizing our impact on the environment. The charter is available online here.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 released
The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (codenamed "Lenny") after 22 months of constant development (14.2.2009). Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which supports a total of twelve processor architectures.
The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's "main" repository.
Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch.
For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available.
All new all2all servers are now installed with Debian Lenny. We will soon start to upgrade the older servers.

Improved hosting backup procedure
We installed a new backup procedure for all shared all2all hostings based on Rsnapshot and a extensible RAID file server, a modern D2D backup system. We keep now full backup copies of the last 7 days. Every 7th day is saved 4 times per month. The MySQL database backups are based on a 31 days rotation, everyday a full backup. This new system considerably improves the safety of your hosting data. All backup processes are run in the early morning when load is very low and the servers are idle.
The term "disk-to-disk", or "D2D", generally refers to disk-to-disk backup. With D2D, a computer hard disk is backed up to another hard disk rather than to a tape or floppy, like in traditonal backupsystems. Typical advantages of disk-to-disk are: the non-linear recovery of data, enabling a specific file to be restored quicker and simpler than with tape. Higher speed and higher capacity, relative to tape or floppy, resulting in shorter backup and recovery windows.

"Freedom not fear 2008"
A broad movement of campaigners and organizations is calling on everybody to join action against excessive surveillance by governments and businesses. On 11 October 2008, concerned people in many countries will take to the streets, the motto being "Freedom not fear 2008". Peaceful and creative action, from protest marches to parties, will take place in many capital cities. For more info, see : freedom-not-fear.eu or humanrights21.org
At this occasion, all2all join other alternative hosters to publish the following declaration:
"We want to stop Data Retention of the type that is being imposed on us by the E.U. Directive 2006/24/EC because it is a preemptive surveillance of communication structures.
Imagine the postal services kept a record of everyone who sent a mail to you. When. Who. How. Where... This is exactly what is happening now – with your email, your phone calls and other electronic communications.
We as providers are forced to store YOUR communication metadata – this is forcing us to work as outsourced police forces. We don’t want this. We will pour as much sand into this machine of suspicion as we possibly can. And we encourage everyone else to do the same! Do not support this attack on privacy!
We will continue to fight against Data Retention in any way possible and we will support each other in our different efforts to fight it."

Nagios monitoring system deployed
Nagios (www.nagios.org) is an open-source host, service, and network monitoring program designed to inform users of network problems before end users do. The monitoring function runs intermittent checks on hosts and services by using external plug-ins that return status information to Nagios. When problems are discovered, the program sends notifications out to administrative contacts in a variety of ways, from email to SMS. Current status information, historical logs, and reports can all be accessed through a Web browser. All shared and dedicated servers at all2all are now monitored 24/7 by a dedicacted health checking server system.
